Exposure: Sun-Part sun
Soil: Dry-Medium
Mature Height: 12 feet
Mature Width: 12 feet

Notable Features: Tasty nuts, with better nut production when there are 3 or more plants. Historically found in oak savannas and even prairies. Excellent for hedgerows! Gorgeous fall color. The more sun it gets, the fuller its form. This shrub needs to take over the landscaping world in McHenry County, so get rid of your burning bushes and put this beauty in its place!

Attracts: Many insects feed on the leaves, nuts, and other parts of American Hazelnut. They include leaf beetles, weevils, walkingsticks, stink bugs, plant bugs, lace bugs, aphids, leafhoppers, sawfly larvae, many moth caterpillars, and other insects. The caterpillars of the skipper Erynnis juvenalis (Juvenal's Duskywing) sometimes feed on the leaves. The nuts are eaten by such birds as the Wild Turkey, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, and Blue Jay. Because American Hazelnut has a dense branching structure and large leaves, it provides excellent cover for various kinds of wildlife and ideal nesting habitat for many songbirds. The value of this shrub to wildlife is fairly high.
