Description: Early Meadow Rue is an excellent shade-garden plant. Use it to fill in where many of your early spring woodland flowers will go dormant. It is valued for its delicate green fern-like foliage, which will last spring through fall. The greenish-yellow flowers resemble little tassles and bloom in early spring when the leaves have not quite opened and the canopy of the trees above is not yet shading the woodland floor. Because Early Meadow Rue is dioecious, some plants produce all male (staminate) flowers, while other plants produce all female (pistillate) flowers. The male flower has yellow stamens and female flower has purple pistils. Buy multiple plants to increase your odds of getting each! Cross-pollination is by wind. The root system is fibrous and rhizomatous, but does not aggressively spread (we wish it did). This wildflower can reproduce by its rhizomes or achenes.
