Artist Statement: If you are an artist in nature, you can’t help but be buffeted on all sides and with all your senses as you experience it. Your experience of the land and its natural citizens is never passive. It MUST be active. You are always taking from it, and in trying to explain it you must give up something of yourself in return.
The subjects that I choose to portray are completely unpredictable. Something just strikes my imagination, by tone or color or mood. It’s not always a serious thing. (A hungry looking frog needs no excuse.) And while my work is representational, I don’t want a make a photograph. Everything needs to serve the fleeting mood that I see, so I alter, strip away, or enhance as necessary to show that moment. In return I leave clues of my whimsy or deep spiritual convictions, as do all artists of the natural world, I bet.
All in all, it seems a fair trade.
