Description: A warrior sedge, great replacement for invasive reed canary grass and phragmites! Absolutely beautiful when massed together, this sedge will form a tight knit base that wards off invasive plants. Common Lake Sedge is rhizomatous; it can spread aggressively and therefore may not be suitable for small landscape plantings but can be a wonderful wetland restoration sedge. It prefers full to partial sun, wet soil conditions and soil containing mud or silt. Easy to transplant the new growth from rhizomes! It is cool-season, actively growing during the spring and fall when soil temperatures are cool.
Common Lake Sedge is a host plant for many Lepidopteran species, including the Broad-Winged Skipper, the Eyed-Brown butterfly, and the Appalachian Brown butterfly. The seeds are consumed by many waterfowl and songbirds, while the roots are sometimes consumed by wetland mammals.
