Description: Shingle Oak is an uncommon oak but is found in a wide variety of soils (gravel, sand, heavy clay). Because the leaves persist until March, Shingle Oak is often used in place of evergreens as a screen. Shingle Oak is the only northern Illinois native oak with no lobes or teeth. At one time, the wood of Shingle Oak was used to make wooden shingles for houses, hence the common name. Can handle compacted soils, roadside salt, and harsh exposure.
