Description: Dune willow is an endangered species in Illinois. It's found in a limited number of locations along the shores of Lake Michigan. These populations are at risk of extinction due to lake erosion. These plants have been ethically and legally cultivated from cuttings obtained from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. This is a very uncommon shrub to find for sale. Can be planted in hedges near ponds or wetlands. It will thrive in a wide variety of soil from gravel to silty loam to clay. The dune willow spring blooms provide food for early emerging spring pollinators, and its leaves feed the caterpillars of many butterflies and moths.
