Description: Grass sedge is a perennial sedge that spreads slowly by rhizomes and reseeding. The preference is partial sun to medium shade, and medium, fertile, loam soils. This sedge can be found in rich mesic woodlands, wooded slopes, wooded groves, and sometimes swampy woodlands. The foliage of this sedge is eaten by the caterpillars of the Eyed Brown butterfly, Appalachian Brown butterfly, sedge grasshoppers, and leaf beetles. The seeds are also an important source of food to many species of birds.
